And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto Him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?"
Such erroneous teachings are what God’s Word refers to as “leaven”. That is why Jesus cautioned His disciples, "Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees" (Matthew 16:6). The leaven of the Pharisees was their doctrine of legalism, which judges and condemns people who fail to keep God’s laws. The leaven of the Sadducees was their doctrine of humanism, which discounts the supernatural and teaches that everything can be explained away using reasoning or science. - JP
